Abdul Thompson Conteh, who was easily identified by his black headband,
was one of the premier goal poachers in MLS ... With blazing speed and
agility, he has a knack of being in the right spot to put away scoring
chances ... He led the San Jose Earthquakes in scoring in 2000 (8g, 3a)
and moved to D.C. United during the off season. Conteh, a Sierra Leone
National Team member, has played professionally in Central America and
Mexico, where he earned the nickname 'The Gazelle' for his athletic grace
... He won the 2000 New York Life Humanitarian of the Year award for his
relief aid efforts in his war-torn native land of Sierra Leone through The
Abdul Thompson Conteh Children's Fund which he had established in 1999.


MLS Career Highlights

2001: In his first season with the club, Conteh was United’s leading scorer
with 15 goals (tied for third in MLS) and one assist for 29 points. He
appeared in 25 MLS matches, starting 17, tallying five game-winning goals
(tied for second in the league). Conteh led MLS in shots on goal with 45 and
his 1.56 points per 90 minutes was fourth in the league. The speedy striker
also posted a tournament-high five goals in the 2001 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open
Cup. He scored both goals in United's crucial 2-1 victory over New England
on April 21 and registered four goals (tying a club record) against the Revs
on May 9.


2000: Conteh led San Jose in scoring with eight goals and three assists for
19 points. He also scored 4 goals in the U.S open cup that same season.























National Team Highlights

A native of Sierra Leone, he played 17 times for his national team between
1993-94, including in the African Nations Cup, before the team was
disbanded due to the country's civil war. He resumed his career with the
team till 1998 when the failed to qualify for the FIFA world tournament in
France.

International Pro Career Highlights

Conteh gained outstanding experience acquired from playing with
numerous teams in Central America. He played for Comunicaciones
(Guatemala) in the fall of 1999, helping the team to the league title. He
played with Rayados (Monterrey, Mexico) from 1996-99 and took part in
the 1999 Copa Libertadores(Equavalent to the UEFA Champions league).
Conteh earned the nickname "La Gacela" (The Gazelle) while playing in
Mexico. Also played for Diablos Rojos (Toluca ,Mexico) from 1995-96 in
Mexico and Atletico Marte (El Salvador) from 1994-95.

College Highlights

Played collegiate soccer at the University of the District of Columbia, and
turned pro after his junior year at UDC in 1993 ... The NCAA Division II
school posted a big upset over nationally ranked Maryland in his final
season.
